The Newman Center was established and sponsored by the Christ the King Parishunder the director of Father Everett R. Harman (1955-65). A "Newman Hall"was added to the church building for the purpose of conducting regular religionclasses for college students. After the time of Father Harman, the next identificationof the Newman Center on campus occurred in the 1979-80 school year, with 16student members and Joe Larmoreaux as faculty adviser.
The Center was organized in April 1980 at the Church Hall, with a visiting priest fromSalt Lake City to help them. The next year, Eric Houle a memberof the Newman Center, was respectively the SUSC(SUU) student body president. The Newman Centers candidate for Homecoming Queen won "Miss Talent SUSC." The clubwas one of the top fund-raisers for the March of Dimes, raising more than $4,000.
With the arrival of Father Michael J. Winterer, a separate mass was scheduled for studentseach Sunday at 7:00 PM that was followed with social activities. A scholarship fund wasestablished as well as Coffee House discussions and social and religious excursions forNewman Center members. The present faculty adviser for the Newman Center is Eric Houle,with Melissa Buckley as the Parish adviser. The Catholic college Newman Center is a campus ministry of Christ the King Catholic Church.
